Brownsville, Brooklyn NYC. This is an area plagued with shocking crime numbers. Overall crime rates are 60% higher than the US national average and specifically violent crime rates are an astonishing 337% higher than the national average. However, despite being an area plagued by gang crime issues, the statistics do not tell the full story. As I often find, the most notorious dangerous areas of a city are often home to the most welcoming, friendly and entertaining people. You cannot and should not judge a book by its cover. So I stepped fresh off the plan from Britain and ventured straight into Brownsville, via the beach town of Coney Island. I met hospitable locals who treated me kindly.
