Galaxy
Naomi Sato - shō

Unlike the majority of the traditional Japanese instruments that are sounding characteristically Japanese, the shō stands out for its unearthly, ethereal quality. Also unlike other traditional instruments such as for the example the nō-kan, shakuhachi or koto, the sound of shō (i.e. pitch, sound colour) is fairly fixed, fact that makes it rather ‘non-Japanese’. However, due its ability to produce an uninterrupted fluid sound, the shō has come to be associated with the light shining from the heavens and the indefinite time-space continuum of the universe.
‘Galaxy’ (hoshi no wa in Japanese), is a work for shō composed for a recital of Mayumi Miyata in 1983. The composition explores the sound qualities of shō by using as imagery the idea of eternal celestial bodies.
