2 Thessalonica 2:13-17
26 Mar 2025 Wednesday
Scripture Reading by Bro Chen Ghee Han / Sharing by Bro Daniel Lim
Background
The first believers in Thessalonica were persecuted by the world, but in the eyes of the Apostle Paul, they were “brothers beloved of the Lord”. Paul was filled with gratitude that they were beloved of the Lord. God's love for us is the mainspring of all His works, all His works in us and all His works through us. He also praised God's supreme election, and it was because of God's election that the believers in Thessalonica could be saved. God's choice was set from the beginning. God chose them long before they chose Him, and He chose them to be holy for salvation.
The word “holy hagiosune” means to separate, to set apart. First, “holiness” means that God and man are separate and apart from sin (Lev 11:44-45); second, “holiness” means that man is set apart from the world to God (Rom 12:1). Being “holy” is both the free grace of God and the will and command of God in calling us. God's work of sanctification is accomplished by two great powers, the Holy Spirit and by faith in the truth. The Spirit of God and the Word of God are vital and indispensable if we are to be holy.
“Stand fast” means to stand firm in the truth, not to be easily shaken, and ‘not to be easily moved’ toward the day of the Lord's return, lest the devil, through false teachers, first mislead them in the truth, and then cause them to give themselves up in spiritual character.
The apostle exhorts the new believers to “stand firm” (v. 15), not only to endure “all persecutions and afflictions” (v. 4), but also not to be moved and alarmed by rumors and temptations (vv. 2-3). The only basis on which the believer can “stand firm” is the Word of God, that is, “every teaching received, whether it be from our mouths or written in letters” (v. 15), which are now written in the New Testament.
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, help me to be able to hold fast to my faith, to live a holy life, and to rely firmly on You during difficult and tempting circumstances.
In Jesus' name we pray, Amen.
