http://www.camel-adv.com - In June 2014, we rode the Arizona and Utah Backcountry Discovery Routes on our BMW F800GS bikes. The Lockhart Basin is rated "Expert Only" on the UTBDR map. This section begins north west of Montacello and ends in Moab. Traveling south to north, the first two thirds of the Lockhart section are fast flat roads with some sandy bits. We were starting wonder why they rated it as Expert Only. The last third is where things get interesting. Lots of rock ledges, deep sand, baby head rocks, erosion cracks, cool rock formation and slabs. Lockhart Basin was definitely the highlight of the Utah BDR for us.
