Brake Upgrades That Can Turn Dangerous
In this episode of Studio Hotrods, we take a deep dive into one of the most misunderstood areas of performance cars: brake system setup. Bigger parts don’t automatically mean better brakes — and in many cases, the wrong combination can seriously compromise safety.
We built a custom demonstration and test rig to clearly show how different variables affect brake performance, including:
Wilwood Master cylinder bore size
Pedal ratio and leverage
Pedal stroke
Brake fluid displacement
Line pressure
Vacuum assist, using our Boostmaster
By changing these variables, we demonstrate how each choice impacts real-world braking and why many common “upgrades” can actually become downgrades when the system isn’t properly matched.
