This piece, "Poliʻahu," is one of my all time favorite songs to perform. In 1990, Frank Kawaikapuokalani Hewett, a famous kumu hula, and haku mele (poet and lyricist), wrote the song to bring to life a 14th century legend of Lāʻieikawai. The song depicts a heart-broken snow goddess named Poliʻahu longing for the return of her lover ʻAiwohikupua, Chief of Wailua, Kauaʻi.
The line, “E Ho’i Mai,” (come back to me), is repeated many times where a deranged Poliʻahu hauntingly calls out for the love that deep down she knows will never be returned. This mele will be joined by world renowned hula dancer, Edieann Healiʻi O Nalani Stanley, who filled the stage embodying the heartbroken snow goddess herself.
This is the third of 8 songs that my Ohana and I performed for my Senior Comps Concert for my music major degree from Occidental College ʻ19. Musicians: Anthony Kauka Stanley, Keahi Rozet, Kevin Cabiles, John Naki, Jayme Naki.
Dancer: Edieann Healiʻi O Nālani Stanley of “Healiʻiʻs Polynesian Revue”
