Adding Color to Your Figure Drawing

This BobBlast was filmed during a Figure Painting Workshop in my studio in Arroyo Grande, California. Our subject was the undraped model - as you can see, we've all been drawing with charcoal and pastel and adding paint along the way too!

Today’s video is two demonstrations - how I add color with pastels and water soluble pencils to pre-existing three-minute warmup gestural sketches.

The paper is BFK Rives white drawing paper. My favorite charcoal is Willow Charcoal vines by Creative Mark. My favorite pastels have a lot of pigment, as you will see in the video. Today I am using Soho Jumbo Soft Pastels.

Why do I add color to my drawings? Color can make the figure pop, can convey a mood and tell a story. Before I add color, I decide where the light source is coming from. Then I add the highlights on the model, to enhance the figure even more.

After working with charcoal and pastels, I always use a spray fixative. My favorite is SpectraFix - an all-natural, odor free, milk/casein formula. SpectraFix is great for all my pastels, chalk, pencil, charcoal, oil pastel and colored pencils. This pump spray stays clear and does not change the original color. It is the best fixative I found for my works on paper.
