Syllabus Overview
The IGCSE Physics syllabus is designed to provide a comprehensive understanding of the fundamental principles of physics. The syllabus is divided into two tiers: Core and Extended.
Core Tier
The Core tier covers the essential topics in physics and is suitable for students who want to gain a basic understanding of the subject. The Core tier syllabus includes:
1. *Kinematics*: motion, velocity, acceleration, and graphs
2. *Dynamics*: forces, Newton's laws, and momentum
3. *Thermal Physics*: temperature, heat transfer, and thermodynamic systems
4. *Electricity*: electric circuits, current, voltage, and resistance
5. *Magnetism*: magnetic fields, forces, and induction
Extended Tier
The Extended tier builds upon the Core tier and provides a more in-depth understanding of physics. The Extended tier syllabus includes all the topics in the Core tier, plus:
1. *Oscillations*: simple harmonic motion, damped oscillations, and resonance
2. *Gravitational Fields*: gravitational force, field lines, and potential energy
3. *Electric Fields*: electric field lines, field strength, and potential difference
4. *Nuclear Physics*: atomic structure, radioactivity, and nuclear reactions
Assessment Overview
The IGCSE Physics assessment consists of two papers:
Paper 1 (Core and Extended)
Duration: 1 hour
Weightage: 40% (Core), 30% (Extended)
Format: Multiple-choice questions, short-answer questions, and structured questions
Paper 2 (Extended only)
Duration: 1 hour 15 minutes
Weightage: 40%
Format: Short-answer questions, structured questions, and essay-style questions
Grading System
The IGCSE Physics grading system is as follows:
A* (90-100%): Exceptional performance
A (80-89%): High achievement
B (70-79%): Good performance
C (60-69%): Satisfactory performance
D (50-59%): Weak performance
E (40-49%): Very weak performance
F (Below 40%): Fail
U (Ungraded): No grade awarded (usually due to insufficient work)
Note: The grading system may vary depending on the exam series and the Cambridge International Examinations (CIE) board.
