The story of Case-Poclain is one of the strangest mergers in heavy equipment history. A French family business that revolutionized hydraulic excavators, forced to sell to an American industrial giant after the 1973 oil crisis devastated the construction industry.
In this video, we explore how Georges Bataille founded Poclain in 1927 in a small French village, how his sons Pierre and Claude built the TY45 – the world's most successful hydraulic excavator with 30,000 units produced – and how the company's ambitions ultimately led to its downfall.
We cover the legendary 88 series excavators (488, 588, 688, 788, 888, 988, 1088, 1188, 1288), the massive EC1000 that was once the largest hydraulic excavator in the world, and the gradual transition from Poclain's distinctive ruby red machines to Case's yellow livery.
