Exclusive Interview With Prema, Arunachal Born UK Indian Detained In China After Passport Dispute

In a shocking and deeply disturbing incident, a UK-resident Indian national from Arunachal Pradesh, Prema Wangjom Thongdok, says she faced humiliation and harassment by Chinese immigration authorities during a transit halt at Shanghai Pudong Airport. Speaking exclusively to Pranay Upadhayay on India Today Global, Prema reveals how officers allegedly declared her Indian passport “invalid” because her birthplace is Arunachal Pradesh, claiming it as Chinese territory.

According to her account, immigration officials mocked her, laughed at her, withheld her passport and confined her inside the airport for nearly 18 hours. She was denied boarding to Japan despite a valid visa, pressured to buy a new China Eastern Airlines ticket and left without proper food or assistance. Unable to leave the transit area, she suffered major financial losses from cancelled flights and hotel bookings.

Prema eventually managed to contact the Indian Consulate, which intervened and put her on a flight out of Shanghai.

She has now written to India’s Prime Minister seeking strong diplomatic action, accountability from China and firm guarantees that Indian citizens, especially from Arunachal Pradesh will not face such mistreatment again.
