Tina Brown, author of "The Diana Chronicles" who has covered the British royal family extensively, discusses her thoughts on the true meanings behind the statement released by Meghan Markle and Prince Harry on Wednesday that they were "stepping down" from royal family duties and what that means going forward for the couple and for the monarchy.
Brown speculated that "working to be financially independent" meant that Meghan and Harry could not stand the constrainment and the layers of palace permissions that come with being part of the monarchy, and that Markle wants to regain control of her life.
Brown says the direction was "inevitable" for the couple but she was shocked at how early the announcement came considering all the details that would need to be worked out.
Brown also said she doesn't believe the Queen was blindsided as many British tabloids are reporting, but knew this would be the ultimate case after the Duke and Duchess of Sussex took an extended sabbatical.
