Maysville Fends Off #2 Shelby 68-65 In State Final Four

Teams riding the two longest winning streaks in Ohio met to decide which program would make their 1st ever State Championship appearance with #2 Shelby (25-3) meeting Maysville (26-3) in the D2 Final Four at UD Arena in Dayton where an unbelievable performance by senior guard Alex Bruskotter would fall just short in the Whippets first trip to State.

The first quarter would end in a draw at 18-18 despite a hot start by Panthers sophomore guard Gator Nichols, who lit up the scoreboard for 16 of his 18 points in the opening half. Nichols would hit a triple to end the opening frame before teammate Alex Bobb, the programs all-time career scoring leader, cashed in a fall away jumper to end the first half, narrowing Shelby's lead to 36-33.

A back and forth 3rd Quarter would start a duel between Bruskotter and Jordyn Watson, who ended the night with 17 of his 26 points in the 2nd Half, as the game entered the final frame tied at 50 apiece. Bruskotter continued his heroics in the 4th Quarter, putting the team on his back with 34 points on a 13-16 shooting performance.

A 5-0 Maysville run in less than 5 seconds would put them in front late in the game, though Shelby hit some timely shots and made clutch plays down the stretch to give themselves a chance in the closing seconds. The Whippets final possession would end with the teams 11th turnover, however, as the Panthers punched their ticket to the State Finals with a 68-65 victory.

Bobb would finish the game with 22 points on 8-21 field goals, as the combination of he, Nichols and Watson accounted for 66 of Maysville's 68 points.

Casey Lantz ended the night with 12 pts and 11 rebs, while Issaiah Ramsey put up 9 pts and had 4 blocks in their final career games. Shelby finishes the season with the most wins (25) and logest winning streak (19) in program history.

Next up for Maysville is a shot at winning their 22nd game in a row vs #9 Kettering Alter (22-7) for the D2 State Championship.
