Day 21 (June 20): Breckenridge to Kremmling - what a difference 72 miles can make! Within a few hours we ride from summit county's bougie ski towns to arid Middle Park, nestled between Byers canyon and Gore canyon, where ranches, livestock fairs and rodeos rule!
Looking at the map and low climbing on today's agenda, we expect a mellow day and meet up with Colorado-based work colleagues in Frisco for a brunch. The craaaazy headwinds, sometimes turning into a nasty crosswind, spices up our not-so-mellow day 😜
We head out of beautiful Frisco and enjoy the smooth bike path along Dillon reservoir into Silverthorne, then along the Blue River and up Ute Pass. We love the views of the many snow-capped mountains, thick alpine forest and wild clouds!
Coming down Ute pass, the landscape changes to wide-open, arid farmland. The headwind intensifies even more and we have to pedal like crazy on sections that are supposed to be downhill - it's one of those days! Feels like the wind gods want to blow us back to Breck!
We see several graciously soaring golden eagles and many farm animals - cattle, horses, donkeys... once we get closer to Kremmling, the view opens up to a beautiful valley with trees, rivers, and the canyons of Byers and Gore as a backdrop. Wow! In our hotel, we discover the local newspaper and it's all about the upcoming rodeo, livestock sales, and the town's pie contest. It's hard to believe that we had dinner in bustling Breckenridge yesterday!
