For the people of ‘Eua Island in Tonga, the local wharf is far more than just infrastructure — it’s a lifeline. It connects families, communities, and small businesses to the rest of the country and the world.
When repeated cyclones and king tides in 2021, followed by the devastating tsunami of January 2022, destroyed the island’s port, the impact was immediate. Small businesses — like the shop owned by local entrepreneur Aloinea Havea — suffered greatly, unable to receive new stock or supplies.
Thanks to a World Bank–supported project, the restoration of the ‘Eua wharf has brought hope back to the community. The rebuilt port is helping families recover, businesses reopen, and the island reconnect with opportunities for the future.
🌍 This film, produced by Room3, highlights the resilience of the Tongan people and the power of global partnerships in rebuilding lives after disaster.
