Founded in 1893, Wellington was a small railroad town in the Cascade Range, located at the western end of the Old Cascade Tunnel. For 9 days in the end of February 1910, snow fell at up to a foot an hour with the worst day accumulating 11 feet. Trapping a passenger train and a mail train just to the east of town. Just after 1 am on March 1st, a lightning strike triggered an avalanche that swept down the mountain, striking 2 trains that were waiting out the blizzard. When the snow settled, 96 people had lost their life in what is still the worst avalanche disaster in U.S. history. Though most of both trains were salvaged in a cleanup effort, parts of the wreckage still lay where they were strewn over 100 years ago as a somber reminder of the disaster.
