(8 Jun 2012) New Zealand Prime Minister John Key was in the German capital Berlin on Friday for talks with German Chancellor Angela Merkel.
Their discussions included the European debt crisis and the looming international bail-out of Spanish banks.
Merkel said Spain hadn't yet sought outside help to deal with the troubles of its banks and Berlin wouldn't pressure it into doing so.
Spain faces rising pressure to find a financial lifeline for its deeply troubled banks - likely from the eurozone's rescue fund since Madrid's borrowing costs on markets have risen sharply.
Responding to a question about the possibility of Spain seeking aid, she said: "It is up to individual countries to turn to us; that has not happened so far, it is not up to Germany to pressure them."
Merkel reiterated that all necessary institutions were ready if a country decides to seek assistance.
Key said: "From New Zealand's point of view, we care passionately about a successful outcome in Europe because that has an impact on our own country, our own fortunes."
