In this video, we’re working with a 7 week old German Shepherd puppy and introducing muzzle training using free shaping with a clicker.
This is not force, not pressure, and not something rushed. We’re letting the puppy think, problem solve, and choose the behavior. Free shaping builds confidence, clarity, and engagement from the very beginning. When done right, muzzle training at this age creates a dog that sees the muzzle as neutral or even positive, not something scary or restrictive.
Muzzle conditioning is an important foundation skill for working dogs, service dogs, police K9s, and even pet dogs. Starting early with the right approach makes a huge difference later in life.
In this session, you’ll see: • How to introduce a muzzle without force
• Why free shaping creates stronger learning
• How clicker timing matters with young puppies
• How to build confidence instead of avoidance
• What early foundation work should actually look like
This puppy is learning that engagement pays and that offering behaviors leads to success. That mindset carries into obedience, protection work, service work, and real-world training later on.
If you’re raising a German Shepherd puppy or any working breed, this video shows how training should start.
