Gary's Record Collection - "Watkins Glen"

Fifty years ago in the summer of 1973, the Grateful Dead, the Allman Brothers Band, and The Band put on a massive show called the "Summer Jam at Watkins Glen." More than 600,000 fans attended the show, which was hoped would be the next "Woodstock." However, there was no filming of the show, and no record put out by any of the bands or the festival organizers.

Surprise, surprise, though, for record buyers when they went into their record stores and found an album called "Watkins Glen." What's this? A sampling of the concert? This sounds too good to be true! And it was... too good to be true, that is. Recordings by King's Road made to sound like a live show and put out on the Pickwick Records label, this was an attempt to cash in on the festival name, as well as the reputations of each band.

This time out, we're giving this record a listen without having heard more than a ten-second sample. Good or bad, this is what record-buyers were faced with in late 1973.
