I recently had the opportunity to visit the captivating Tarot Garden, a remarkable artistic creation by the renowned sculptor Niki de Saint Phalle. As I stepped through the thick, circular entrance pavilion designed by architects Mario Botta and Roberto Aureli, I was immediately transported into a world of vibrant colors, whimsical forms, and profound symbolism.
The garden's genesis began in 1979, when Niki de Saint Phalle was inspired by her visits to Antoni Gaudí's Parc Güell in Barcelona and the enchanting Garden of Bomarzo. Identifying the Tarot Garden as the magical and spiritual dream of her life, Niki dedicated over 17 years to its construction, collaborating with a team of skilled workers and renowned artists such as her husband, Jean Tinguely, who created the metal structures and mechanical elements.
As I wandered through the garden, I was captivated by the 22 imposing sculptures, each one a unique interpretation of a Tarot card, covered in a dazzling array of colored glass, mirrors, and ceramics. The attention to detail and the sheer scale of these figures were truly awe-inspiring. I couldn't help but feel a sense of wonder and connection to the profound themes and symbolism that Niki had woven into this extraordinary place.
