The 1980 Scottish Cup Final was meant to be a celebration of football’s greatest rivalry. Instead, it became the day the game in Scotland changed forever.
On May 10th 1980, Celtic and Rangers met at Hampden Park with a trophy on the line, and decades of tension in the stands. Aberdeen, under the leadership of a young Alex Ferguson, had just broken their hold on the league, so both teams were desperate for a consolation. What followed the final whistle was not a pitch invasion of joy, but one of the most infamous riots in British football history. Bottles, bricks and metal bars were ripped from the terraces. Fans clashed with each other and with police. Mounted officers were sent charging onto the pitch, and within months, alcohol was banned at Scottish football grounds – a law that still stands today.
If you were there that day, or if you’ve heard the stories passed down over the years, share your memories in the comments, we'd all love to hear them.
