The story of Mafia: Definitive Edition (2020) follows Tommy Angelo, a 1930s taxi driver who is unwillingly recruited into the Salieri crime family after a run-in with two mobsters. As he works his way up, he becomes more involved in the criminal underworld and his life becomes more dangerous. Ultimately, Tommy's story of his rise and fall is recounted in flashbacks to a detective, leading to his cooperation with the law in exchange for his family's safety.

Initial encounter: In 1930, taxi driver Tommy Angelo is forced by two men, Paulie and Sam, to help them escape an ambush by a rival family. Joining the family: After the Morello family puts a hit out on him, Tommy joins Don Salieri's organization for protection. Rise through the ranks: Tommy becomes a trusted member of the Salieri family, earning money through various jobs. However, his new life grows more dangerous and morally compromising. The deal with the detective: Tommy eventually seeks out Detective John Norman to provide information on the Salieri family in exchange for his own protection and that of his family. The aftermath: Tommy's testimony leads to the conviction of Salieri and his organization. He and his family are relocated under new identities, but the story ends with his eventual assassination by hitmen, a fate he accepts to protect his loved ones.
