This week Google flipped the table on eCommerce discovery & I wanted to go over what I believe this means for SEO’s and how we optimise search moving forward.
Both Google & Shopify just announced UCP (Universal Commerce Protocol) + AI Checkout, which basically means Google’s AI won’t just recommend products anymore…
It’ll be able to discover → compare → checkout inside Google’s own AI surfaces (AI Mode in Search + Gemini app).
That shift has one massive implication for DTC brands in 2026, visibility won’t be who ranks #1” anymore it’ll be “who’s eligible to be chosen + purchased by the agent.”
And eligibility is going to be driven by:
• Feed quality (Merchant Center / PLA data)
• Structured product knowledge (schema, attributes, compatibility, returns, shipping)
• On-page decision support that AI can extract and reuse such as FAQs
• Deal + offer signals (Direct Offers + AI placements already being tested)
Here’s how I am approaching this over the coming weeks and would love your feedback on how you’re approaching SEO for Commerce Protocols.
1) Product data + feed foundation (Merchant Center)
If Google is powering checkout inside AI Mode, feed completeness becomes non-negotiable.
2) Structured data uplift (Schema + extractability)
Because the agent needs structured product truth and as many details as possible about any given product.
3) “Agent-ready” PDP optimisation (portable knowledge)
Your PDP needs to become something an AI can reuse so answering Q&A / decision-support questions, enrich PDP content around the nuance buyers actually search for (use cases, fit/feel, compatibility, reassurance)
4) SERP + AI Mode monitoring (feedback loop)
This is where brands will win. Focus on understanding the patterns being rewarded (format, entities, Q&A style)
5) Offer + promotion strategy (where relevant)
Google has already confirmed Direct Offers testing meaning deal-led placements inside AI.
The bottom line, 2026 SEO won’t just be about “ranking pages”, It’ll be about making your brand portable + agent-ready so Google’s can reliably:
• interpret your products
• compare them
• recommend them
• and now… sell them
