Union officials tell MPs that employees work under a 'culture of fear' under Mike Ashley (pictured left arriving at Parliament with his wife this morning and right, appearing before MPs at the Business Select Committee), where offences as trivial as 'excessive chatting' can get workers sacked. He faced protests outside Parliament over reports of poor working conditions at his firm - in particular the warehouse in Derbyshire where a woman had to give birth in a toilet in 2014 because she feared being given a 'strike' for missing work. Mr Ashley, also the Newcastle United owner, insisted he has nothing to hide and had been 'open and honest' at every stage of correspondence with MPs as they demanded to grill him over working conditions at his firm. The retail tycoon, who is also the owner of Newcastle United, announced on Friday he would not attend Parliament for the grilling. But Mr Ashley, who was facing a Parliamentary summons, said he had since decided that a 'lengthy legal battle would be of no benefit to either of us'.
