An alternative to starting the tapped holes with a drill press, is to use a block of wood with hole drilled in it to just clear the outside diameter of tap. Use the block to keep the tap perpendicular when starting to tap hole, then no need for drill press. Thanks to THOMAS BRUBAKER for this idea.
