Super Breakout (Arcade) 1978

Super Breakout is a classic action arcade game that was indeed developed and published by Atari, Inc. and released in arcades in September 1978. It is the official sequel to the highly successful 1976 game Breakout.

The core mechanics of bouncing a ball off a paddle to destroy a wall of bricks remain the same as the original, but Super Breakout introduced several new and distinct gameplay variations:

-Progressive: This mode features a single paddle and ball, but the entire brick wall gradually moves down the screen towards the player's paddle, gaining speed the longer the ball is in play. The game becomes a race against the descending wall.

-Double: In this mode, the player controls two paddles simultaneously (one stacked above the other) and has two balls in play at once. Losing a life only happens when both balls are missed.

-Cavity: The player starts with one ball in play, while two additional balls are "trapped" within pockets in the brick wall. The goal is to free these trapped balls, allowing up to three balls to be in play at the same time for higher scoring potential.

The arcade version of Super Breakout originally used a black and white monitor with translucent colored overlays on the screen to simulate the appearance of different colored brick rows. Unlike the original Breakout which was built with discrete logic, Super Breakout was powered by a MOS Technology 6502 CPU, which allowed for the implementation of the more complex game modes.

Atari sold over 4,805 Super Breakout arcade cabinets, and the game was a commercial success, becoming the ninth highest-earning arcade video game in Japan in 1978 and the eighth highest-earning in the US in 1979. It was later ported to the Atari 2600, Atari 5200 and Atari 8 bit computer. Later ports included the Atari ST (1987) and Game Boy/Color (1998/1999).
