A pilonidal cyst is a small sac or pocket that forms near the top of the buttocks, usually at the cleft where the tailbone (coccyx) is located. It often develops when hair punctures the skin and becomes embedded, leading to infection and abscess formation. Common symptoms include pain, swelling, redness, drainage of pus, and sometimes fever if infection spreads. Risk factors include prolonged sitting, excessive hair, friction, sweating, and being overweight. Treatment depends on the severity: for mild cases, warm compresses, good hygiene, and hair removal in the area can help; if infected, antibiotics and drainage of pus may be required. In recurrent or chronic cases, surgical removal of the cyst and surrounding tissue (pilonidal cystectomy) is the definitive treatment. After surgery, proper wound care, maintaining cleanliness, avoiding prolonged sitting, and preventing hair regrowth in the area help reduce recurrence. #pilonidalcyst #cyst #tailbonepain #tailbone
