It's quite simple if you think about it a little bit. For every cycle of the pendulum the weights rise and drop twice on the lever.
There is something to it when something is "90" degrees out of phase or when the reaction is 90 degrees from the action. This is when an asymmetry occurs.
Where does the extra energy come from? Simple, it comes from gravity.
