Euripides was an ancient Greek tragedian and one of the most influential playwrights in classical antiquity. Some essential information about him:
He lived in Athens during the 5th century BC and wrote around 92 plays, though only 19 have survived intact.
Along with Aeschylus and Sophocles, he was one of the three great tragedians of classical Athens. His realistic and humanistic tragedies profoundly influenced Greek drama and Roman plays.
Many of his plays dealt with contemporary events and political issues, often challenging traditional religious beliefs and social mores. His most famous works include Medea, The Bacchae, Hippolytus, Electra, Trojan Women, and Iphigenia at Aulis.
He introduced several innovations in theater, like the deus ex machina (a god lowered onto the stage to resolve a situation) and analytic stage scenes, which featured dialogue instead of messengers recounting the action.
Towards the end of his life, he left Athens and lived in Macedon at the court of King Archelaus. The reasons for his voluntary exile are unclear.
His plays explored complex human emotions and psychological tensions like few other ancient playwrights. He is considered one of the most modern of the classic Greek dramatists.
