Charlotte Perkins Gilman's novel Herland tells the tale of three American men who go in search of a legendary place populated only by women.
They eventually find it and are taken captive. While imprisoned in relative comfort, they learn of the country's customs and language.
Eventually growing tired of their confinement, they attempt to escape but are recaptured and after a time are allowed to assimilate.
Each man develops a relationship with one of the women and they all marry. The relationships vary in success and following an attempted rape, one man is expelled and another returns home with him, accompanied by his wife.
American lecturer, essayist, and activist Charlotte Perkins Gilman's Herland was first published in 1915. Throughout her life she advocated for financial independence for women, and she set up cooperative houses—not unlike her imagined Herland. The novel uses the utopian ideal of an all-female country to explore chauvinism and misogyny through the eyes of the male interlopers.
The science fiction novel Herland contains many enduring themes including physical and mental agility, as Herlanders value education and exercise and balancing bodily agility with learning; the natural order, as an ordered life in Herland flows from the natural cycle of motherhood; and women’s restrictions, as the women of Herland are free of the confining roles imposed by traditional society. Important symbols include clothing, the men’s quarters/prison, and the forest.
