I can't believe it's been 53 years since the release of the Oscar-nominated film, "Lady Sings The Blues" on October 12, 1972. Since then, Diana Ross is known as one of the world's most talented artists, having conquered, music, films, Broadway, television, concerts, books - just about every known media known to humankind. "Lady Sings The Blues" was her first starring movie and it garnered 5 Oscar nominations, including one for Best Actress. In the years, that followed, Diana Ross performed several songs from the movie in her concerts, and I've been lucky to have gone to enough of her shows to capture some of those moments. Surprisingly, several of these videos I had never posted before. For this anniversary, I thought it would be fun to edit several of these videos into one.
Starting with Tracee Ellis Ross singing an edited portion of the acapella title song that went viral when I first posted it, I followed it with Diana Ross duetting with one of her vocalists, Lamont Van Hook, on her version of Billy Holiday's classic song, "God Bless The Child." These were captured at the Venetian Theater in Las Vegas, NV in 2015. Next was a trip to Amsterdam, NL where I captured Ms Ross singing an intimate version of "Fine and Mellow" on the huge stage of the Ziggy Dome in 2023. Then it's off to Washington DC where Diana Ross sang the captivating ballad, "The Man I Love" inside the Kennedy Center in 2016. The Chicago Theater in Chicago, IL had Ms Ross dusting off a rare treat, "My Man" in 2019. Flying across the country to San Francisco in 2013, Diana Ross had the audience inside the Golden Gate Theater in the palms of her hands as she did a sultry version of "Don't Explain." I close the video with the only song that was released from the soundtrack, "Good Morning Heartache." The song achieved notable success, peaking at #34 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #20 on the R&B chart in 1973. It also reached the top ten on the Adult Contemporary chart. The soundtrack of the film reached #1 on the Billboard album chart and was the fourth best-selling R&B album and fifth best-selling Pop album of 1973. In the UK, it was certified gold for sales of over 100,000 copies.
I included photos and footage from the film to this video as a remembrance and tribute to the film that is now considered a modern classic. Happy Anniversary!
