With the introduction of an affordable automobile about 1910, Americans took to the roads and highways of the nation to experience firsthand our history, natural features, and the growing state and federal park system. Experiencing the road became an American pass time and for some a pilgrimage. This presentation highlights Texas roadside attractions and introduces typologies, language, and key historic trends of the 20th century. In general, roadside architecture encompasses tourist courts and motels, drive-in restaurants, drive-in theaters, neon signs, and service stations. This presentation, led by Galveston Historical Foundation's Executive Director, Dwayne Jones, will include the history of automobile tourism in Texas as well as key buildings and attractions conceived and executed to draw auto tourists of the 20th century.
