Car Seat Safety Teaching: Nursing Care & Discharge Pediatric Maternity Nurse NCLEX Review

Car seat safety is an important topic for both nurses and parents. As a pediatric or maternity nurse, you'll want to know car seat safety when educating parents for discharge.


You'll also want to know nursing interventions to take when you notice that a child is not properly secured in a car seat restraint device.



There are four main types of car seats / restraint devices:
-Rear-facing car seats
-Forward-facing car seats
-Child booster seats
-The regular seat belt system that comes equipped in automobiles

When selecting a proper car seat/restraint device, it is important to follow the latest state laws, as well as the manufacturer's guidelines for height and weight limits. These laws and guidelines do sometimes change as new studies and technology become available.


In addition, it is important that you know how to assess equipment to ensure that the child has been properly secured. The chest strap, for example, should rest at the armpit level. The head should be 1" or lower in rear-facing seats, or above the tops of the ears for forward-facing seats.


Harness straps should be snug enough so that they can't be pinched with excess.
