Identifies self by name. Identifies resident by name.
Washes hands.
Explains procedure to resident, speaking clearly, slowly, and directly. Maintains face-to-face contact whenever possible.
Provides privacy.
Adjusts the bed to a safe level. Locks bed wheels. Lowers head of bed.
Stands at opposite side of the bed to where resident will be turned.
Moves resident to side of bed using proper procedure.
Turning resident away from self:
Crosses resident’s arm over chest and moves arm on side resident is being turned to out of the way. Crosses leg nearest self over far leg. Stands with feet shoulder-width apart, bends knees, and places one hand on resident’s shoulder and the other on the nearest hip. Pushes resident toward other side of bed while shifting weight from back leg to front leg.
Turning resident toward self:
Crosses resident’s arm over chest and moves arm on side resident is being turned to out of the way. Crosses leg farthest from self over near leg. Stands with feet shoulder-width apart, bends knees, and places one hand on resident’s far shoulder and the other on the far hip. Rolls resident toward self.
Positions resident comfortably using pillows or other supports and checks for good alignment. Covers resident.
Returns bed to lowest position.
Places call light within resident’s reach.
Washes hands.
