Why Truman Desegregated the Military was not a safe decision, not a popular decision, and certainly not a political calculation designed to win votes. In the summer of 1948, Why Truman Desegregated the Military became a question that baffled his advisers, enraged Southern Democrats, and unsettled senior generals who warned it would fracture discipline in the armed forces.
