14- FortiGate SSL Certificates - Explained

In this video we are going to tal about FortiGate SSL Certificates.
We will talk about digital certificates, how it works betwen FortiGates devices and other endpoints.
We will explain the default self-signed certificates and also describe how to generate new certificates through company-owned CA or public trusted CAs and finally explain the FortiGate Certificate Store.

A FortiGate SSL certificate is a digital certificate used by a FortiGate firewall to secure communication, primarily for HTTPS connections, both for inbound and outbound traffic. It ensures that the communication between a client and the FortiGate (or between the FortiGate and other servers) is encrypted and authenticated, preventing eavesdropping and tampering.

1. What it does:
Authentication:
It verifies the identity of the FortiGate firewall to clients, ensuring they are connecting to the legitimate device.
Encryption:
It encrypts the data transmitted between the client and the FortiGate, making it unreadable to unauthorized parties.
Security:
It plays a crucial role in SSL/TLS inspection, allowing the FortiGate to decrypt, inspect, and re-encrypt HTTPS traffic to detect malware and enforce security policies.
2. How it works:
Inbound inspection:
When a client connects to the FortiGate via HTTPS, the FortiGate presents its SSL certificate to the client.
Outbound inspection:
The FortiGate can also inspect outbound HTTPS traffic from internal users to the internet, using SSL inspection techniques.
Certificate exchange:
The client verifies the FortiGate's certificate, and if trusted, the communication proceeds with encrypted packets.

Self-signed certificates:

FortiGate stores certificates in specific locations (e.g., under 'System --» Certificates' in the GUI).
