Sour Service Requirements - H2S-containing environments in Oil and Gas production.
PREN - Pitting-Resistance Equivalent Number
WHAT IS F PREN?
Why is NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 is SO Important in Oil & Gas?
Brief Scope: NACE MR 0175/ ISO 15156:
1. It describes general principles and gives requirements and recommendations for the selection and qualification of metallic materials for service in equipment used in oil and gas production and in natural-gas sweetening plants in H2S-containing environments.
2. As a supplement, It can be applied to help to avoid costly corrosion damage to the equipment itself.
3. ANSI/NACE MR0175/ISO 15156 addresses all mechanisms of cracking that can be caused by H2S, including sulfide stress cracking, stress corrosion cracking, hydrogen-induced cracking and stepwise cracking, stress-oriented hydrogen-induced cracking, soft zone cracking, and galvanically induced hydrogen stress cracking.
10 Key Points of MR0175 / ISO 151561.
1. Purpose: Defines requirements for metallic materials in H₂S-containing (sour) oil & gas environments to prevent cracking and corrosion failures.
2. Failure Mechanisms: Controlled Protects against Sulfide Stress Cracking (SSC), Hydrogen-Induced Cracking (HIC), Stress Corrosion Cracking (SCC), and other hydrogen-related failures.
3. Applicable Materials: Covers carbon steels, low-alloy steels, martensitic stainless steels, duplex & super duplex steels, austenitic stainless steels, and nickel-based alloys.
4. Hardness Limits: Specifies maximum allowable hardness (e.g., ≤22 HRC for many carbon/low-alloy steels) to reduce SSC susceptibility.
5. Environmental Limits: Sets permissible ranges for H₂S partial pressure, pH, temperature, and chloride content where materials can be safely used.
6. Material Qualification: Materials must be qualified through testing or proven field service experience for sour environments before use.
7. Heat Treatment Requirements: Defines mandatory heat treatment conditions (e.g., PWHT, quenching & tempering) to achieve safe hardness and microstructure.
8. Three-Part Structure (ISO 15156)
Part 1: General principles
Part 2: Carbon & low-alloy steels
Part 3: Stainless steels & nickel alloys
9. Mandatory for Sour Service Projects: Oil & gas companies, EPC contractors, and regulators often require compliance with MR0175/ISO 15156 for design approval.
10. Global Recognition: Known as NACE MR0175 (historic) and ISO 15156 (current). Both refer to the same standard, widely accepted in oil & gas worldwide.
PREN: Pitting-Resistance Equivalent Number- FPREN
Higher values of FPREN provide higher corrosion resistance
FPREN number developed to reflect and predict the pitting resistance of a CRA based upon the proportions of the elements Cr, Mo, W, and N in the chemical composition of the alloy.
