How to adjust the handbrake (parking brake) on a 2002 to 2009 VW Polo Mk4 9N (with rear drum brakes). This adjustment is just for the handbrake lever as the cables can stretch over time. However, if your handbrake rises too high, don’t assume that the issue is caused by stretched cables. There could be other issues causing the excessive lever travel, such as a broken anchor point or, more likely, there is a problem with the brake shoe self-adjusting mechanism.
