What Opioids Do to Your Breathing – The Scary Truth 😱

In this talk, we will discuss the mechanism of opioid-induced respiratory depression (OIRD) 🧠🫁. Opioids suppress the rhythm-generating neurons in the preBötzinger complex in the ventral respiratory group (VRG) in the medulla 🌀. Opioids also suppress the quiescence neurons in the preBötzinger complex that respond to external signals for respiratory modulation and drive ⚙️🧬.

We will also discuss how opioids impact the central and peripheral chemoreceptors 🧪, and finally, the chest wall rigidity and upper airway collapse caused by opioids 🫀❌.
