Picked up a John Deere X540 off Facebook with a serious complaint: it lost oil pressure while mowing.

This tractor runs a Kawasaki FD731V-HS02 and when oil pressure disappears, you have to prove whether the engine is still worth saving before you throw parts at it

In this video we confirm the no oil pressure condition, then walk through the exact checks I use to determine whether the engine has internal damage

We perform a leak down test on both cylinders and verify they hold pressure (about 98%), then use a borescope to inspect cylinder walls for scoring, We also drain the oil to see what it looks like

With the basics looking good, we pull the engine and go deeper

We remove the FD731 Engine and access the crankcase sump cover and water pump

Remove the water pump/impeller and inspect the sump area

Inspect the oiling system and find the common failure point: a bad oil pump gear

Check for metal/debris with a magnet and inspect oil for aluminum glitter. Aluminum glitter is obviously not magnetic but other metals that are ruined during engine failure are

Replace the oil pump gear and reassemble correctly

Seal the crankcase cover using Permatex Ultra Gray (no traditional gasket sold)

Replace the water pump gasket and water pump o-ring

Reseal the oil pump o-rings where the sump mates to the crankcase

Inspect the oil pressure relief valve spring and ball

Reinstall the engine and verify it’s back in service
