The race for New Jersey governor continues to heat up against Republican Jack Ciattarelli and Democrat Mikie Sherrill. Earlier, Rep. Sherrill said on a podcast, “Who eats pork roll? I think that’s gross.” Ciattarelli took the opportunity to go after the Congresswoman for her comments about the Garden State’s favorite breakfast food. Joining LiveNOW’s Andy Mac to help settle the debate is Brent Johnson, a Central Jersey native who covers politics for NJ.com.
Some perceived Rep. Sherrill's comments as a direct affront to the beloved Jersey breakfast meat. “Hey Mikie. Tell me you’re not from Jersey without telling me you’re not from Jersey. You know what, don’t worry about it. You remind us of it every day in ways big and small,” said Ciattarelli on social media in response.
“Taylor ham or pork roll, what do you call it?” Sherrill was asked as she practically waved the question away. “Come on, you’re from Wayne, it’s Taylor ham!” Sherrill said in response.
Taylor Ham was invented by John Taylor in Trenton in 1856. Until the Pure Food and Drug Act of 1906, it was marketed as “Taylor’s Prepared Ham”.
