Olivier Messiaen composed Visions de l’Amen in 1943 in Nazi-occupied Paris, collaborating with pianist and composer Yvonne Loriod, who would later become his wife. Scored for two pianos, the work unfolds across seven movements that explore themes of creation, love, suffering, and spiritual transcendence.
Messiaen called the main theme the theme of creation. It begins in the Amen of Creation in ‘grand and solemn chords’ and ends in the Amen of the Consummation in a ‘long chorale of glory.’
Recorded live in the Daniel and Joanna S. Rose Studio on November 21, 2019.
