Episode 3: Columbia Station
Columbia Station was an Adams Morgan institution for decades, a spot where passersby could stumble onto a jazz show or jam session nearly every night of the week.
In February 2020, it was announced that Columbia Station would not renew its lease. But unlike so many other closures, this one had a note of hope: Columbia Station's proprietor owns the building next door, Green Island Café, and moved much of the music programming to that space.
But that space itself mattered, and deserves remembering. This installment of the Jazz and Freedom Festival features words and sounds by Peter Edelman, the longtime Columbia Station house pianist who played with greats like Butch Warren, Bill "Magic" Lavender Bey and others.
CORRECTIONS:
1:25: The tune is Charlie Parker's "Big Foot," not "Mohawk."
