The major U.S. equity indices closed lower Monday as first-quarter earnings wind down and following a disappointing report on manufacturing activity.
The Empire State manufacturing index survey showed that manufacturing activity grew in the New York region in May at a slower pace than in April. The Empire State index fell to 11.9 in May, from 21.7 in April, which was the highest level in a year.
Donald Trump announced on Monday that he won't seek the U.S. presidency, according to a Bloomberg report, and noted that he has been unofficially campaigning for the past several months, but has determined politics are not his priority.
Trump said, "Business is my greatest passion and I am not ready to leave the private sector."
In corporate news, NYSE Euronext (NYSE:NYX) closed down over 12.5% after the Nasdaq OMX Group (NYSE:NDAQ) and IntercontinentalExchange (NYSE:ICE) withdrew their bid for the rival exchange.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJI) closed 0.14% lower at 12,548, the S&P500 (INX) closed 0.62% lower at 1,329, and the Nasdaq Composite (IXIC) closed 1.63% lower at 2,782.
