Despite the iPhone app telling me it was a day of sunshine, it turned out to be a day of intermittent rain. I thought about cancelling the ride in the morning but my eternal optimism was holding out for a clearing of the clouds. I went from Lecce to Copertino first and onward to Nardò. I decided to keep going because I had some extra time and visited Porto Selvaggio. Unfortunately I had to rush back uphill to make it back in time for the train from Nardò. I barely made it and then found out that the particular train that was scheduled was not fitted to carry bikes. I could wait 2 hours for the next one and spend an hour going back to Lecce or ride back in an hour and a half. I chose to ride and that turned out to be the final mistake of the day. The "shortest" route was little more than a dirt path full of rocks so it was extremely slow-going. Plenty of lessons learned for next time.
