The call came at 7:47 PM on a Wednesday, two days before my mother's fiftieth birthday. I was in my home office reviewing acquisition proposals when my sister Diane's name appeared on my phone screen.
"Lily," she said without preamble when I answered. "We need to talk about Saturday."
"Mom's birthday dinner. What about it?"
"You can't come."
I set down my pen. "Excuse me?"
"I'm sorry, but we've discussed it as a family, and we think it's best if you sit this one out." Her voice had that practiced tone she used when delivering bad news she didn't actually feel bad about. "Mom's turning fifty. It's a milestone. We're celebrating at Rousseau, and the whole family will be there—aunts, uncles, cousins. People who matter."
