Episode 37 - Though I have tried some different brands of watercolor and mixed media papers over the years, this is a first for me trying an actual head-to-head comparison. I repeated the same scene with the same watercolor paint, colored pencil and ink on 8 papers:
The 5 watercolor papers are all 100% cotton, hot pressed, 300 gsm (grams per square meter):
Arches
Canson Heritage
Fabriano Artistico
Legion Stonehenge
Saunders Waterford
The 3 mixed media papers are all acid free, made of pulp:
Canson XL, 160 gsm, fine tooth
Fabriano 1264, 160 gsm, medium tooth
Strathmore 400 series, 300 gsm, vellum surface
I was testing the watercolor papers mainly for using with mixed media dog portraits. And the mixed media papers for drawing and painting with a variety of media. Might be anything from graphite to markers, colored pencil, ink and / or watercolor, just depending on the project or art challenge.
I’ve been using 4 of these papers for awhile, and 4 of them are new to me. One of which is going to be my new favorite for mixed media dog portraits. No spoilers, check out the video to see which one!
