Dog On a Log Review - Decodable BOOKS for Struggling Readers/Dyslexia

Today’s video is a review of the DOG ON A LOG book series. You may have heard of these books before. They are very popular for children with dyslexia. However, these books can still be used by any child in the process of learning to read.

In fact, my children are not dyslexic. These books are phonetically decodable. That means that the text can be easily sounded out and doesn’t contain very complicated words, or lots of irregular words and exceptions. In other words, the text is really controlled and well-thought.


Besides, they don’t look at all like baby books. They are in fact chapter books… And there is also a storyline.

With these books you can give your children the experience of being able to read chapter books all by themselves. That will give your kids a sense of achievement. It is also what an amazing way to get them into independent reading from an early age.

If there are good for children learning to read in general (because they can go over the phonics rules they know about at that moment in time, consolidating what they already know), why is it that they are particularly good for children with dyslexia?
For a number of reasons that I also cover in this video.

If you have a really young reader, maybe this is not the best option. They may prefer books that are shorter and feel more like young reader books.
