We are developing metro systems. 💡
The Helsinki metro uses many original systems that are nearing the end of their life cycle. The metro must be reformed so that safe and reliable traffic can be guaranteed in the future as well.
🚇We will switch to a semi-automatic system for train control. The biggest change to the previous system is that the automatic system allows for a shorter safety distance between metro trains.
🚇In the future, metro trains can therefore run closer to each other on the track, i.e. more frequently. Putting it all together, we can say that as the metro's capacity increases, more and more passengers can fit on board.
🚇By increasing the frequency of trains alone, the metro's capacity can be increased by 25 percent, which is as much as building a new lane on a highway.
🚇The changes will be implemented in a way that does not cause any disruption to passengers.
🚇 The installation of the system is about to start in year 2026. In 2033 the last cab will be equipped with the new system, and it will be possible to increase the frequency of metro services to 120 seconds.
By developing the metro systems, we will ensure that the Helsinki Metropolitan Area will also move smoothly and sustainably in the coming decades.
