Developmental dental disorders may be due to abnormalities in the differentiation of the dental lamina and the tooth germs (anomalies in number, size, shape) or to abnormalities in the formation of the dental hard tissues (anomalies in structure).
In some, both stages of differentiation are abnormal. Developmental dental disturbances may be inherited, acquired, or idiopathic.
