Windscapes is another confirmation of Hosokawa's mastermind on the topic of creating real-time ambiences, something particular on the relationship between tarditional and classical japonese music and the hearing sensacionism inherent on these works, taking as another example his series of "Landscape" compositions, for many different instrumental essembles

Written for a Percussion Duo, Hosokawa, merges the different instrumental sets with the objective of giving the listener the sensation of the wind passing through different natural spaces, well-concretized by his experience and knowledge on the art of percussion writing and his extended techniques, like the different pairs of mallets that the percussionst must have ("superball format" mallets, for example), different gestures required for the percussionist to "draw" on the drum's surface, require, contrasts on timbre between coated drumheads, natural heads, whistles, the human voice and percussion acessories such as antique cymbals, triangles and tibetan bowls

Therefore selecting a specific set on the score, Hosokawa makes the instrumentation something merely sugestive, being the search for different and plural sonority the main goal to achieve on this piece, sometimes pacific, sometimes stormy.

There is also a little improvised section near the end of this piece, where is asked successives waves of "noise", called this way by the composer
